Prof. Michael H. Schoenberg is the head of the Surgery Department at Munich’s Red Cross Hospital,

in which approximately 2,800 operations are carried out each year. Professor Schoenberg and his team are responsible for all the general surgery involving thyroid and parathyroid operations, hernias and open abdominal surgery. Apart from pancreatic surgery, his special field is minimal invasive surgery (keyhole surgery) with over 800 operations each year. Professor Schoenberg and his staff work in this field of scar-free surgery on innovative laparoscopic/endoscopic single-site procedures (LESS). With these techniques the gall bladder or the appendix are only removed through a small opening near the navel. Patients recover more quickly and are free of pain. After a few weeks, operation scars are no longer visible. The department is also significantly involved in this field in new developments of operational procedures and is one of the centres of excellence certified by the DGAV to perform minimal invasive surgery.

A special focus is on operations of the pancreas. This specialisation applies both to inflammatory diseases as well as benign and malignant tumours of the organ. These interventions are very intricate and should be carried out if at all possible at specialist centres, which have the necessary experience. Prof. Schoenberg’s surgery unit in collaboration with Prof. Born’s gastroenterology unit is the first interdisciplinary centre of excellence for pancreas diseases certified by the DGAV in Ger-many.

The department also specialises in operations of the colon and rectum with the complete range of open and if recommendable minimal invasive interventions plus obesity surgery.

Munich’s Red Cross Hospital enables interdisciplinary collaboration with doctors in other specialist fields, so that specialists can be called on at any time to provide the best possible care to patients in relation to the intervention and during their entire stay with us as inpatients. The department is distinguished by its surgeons’ many years of experience and the ongoing scientific evaluation of the treatment results.
